Ongoing Projects in Canada

Activity n° CAN001
Project Name Hyperspectral Imaging (HI) development and trials
Project Description To define the ability of HI to detect buried mines, to develop a thermal infrared hyperspectral imager, and to test derived detection algorithms.
Where Canadian Centre for Mine Action Technologies/ Defence Research Establishment Suffield
Category Detection Sensors, Vehicle Mounted
Detection Sensors, Handheld
When Program in place for more than 10 years. Funded until 2003
Comments DRES staff also participated in the airborne multispectral trial (MUST 2000) in northern Australia and is conducting data analysis of results collected over the minefield target.

Activity n° CAN002
Project Name Trial of wide variety of hand held and occasionally wide array metal detectors.
Project Description To define the capabilities and limitations of off-the-shelf and developmental metal detectors.
Where Various locations including Afghanistan, Cambodia, Croatia, and Bosnia for in-country trials. Majority of trials done at CCMAT/DRES.
Category Detection Sensors, Handheld
When On going
Comments Most recent major trial was as part of the International Pilot Project for Technical Cooperation (IPPTC)

Activity n° CAN003
Project Name T&E of developmental instrumented prodder which is designed to discriminate between naturally occurring objects such as rocks and mine materials such as metal and plastic
Project Description To define capabilities and limitations of developmental instrumented prodders prior to introduction into the humanitarian demining community.
Where CCMAT/DRE Suffield
Category Manual Demining

Activity n° CAN004
Project Name T&E of vehicle mounted Anti-tank GPR Detectors and investigations into the use of GPR to detect Anti-personnel mines.
Project Description Evaluate off-the-shelf vehicle mounted GPR performance. Investigate and develop software and techniques that can improve the detectability of Anti-personnel mines using commercially available GPR detectors
Where CCMAT/ DRE Suffield
Category Detection Sensors, Vehicle Mounted
When On-going
Comments Israeli ELTA GPR is only GPR T&E of vehicle mounted system. Current contract for investigating anti-personnel mine detection with handheld GPR is funded until 2002.

Activity n° CAN005
Project Name T&E of an optical tripwire detector currently under development for CCMAT will be done in a variety of backgrounds, light conditions and using a variety of tripwire materials/configurations
Project Description To define capabilities and limitations of a unique detector which can optically detect tripwires or segments of tripwires under realistic conditions
Where CCMAT/DRE Suffield
Category Manual Demining

Activity n° CAN006
Project Name T&E of various nuclear-based mine detection instruments under development for CCMAT and DRDC
Project Description Continuing improvements to the thermal neutron activation (TNA) confirmatory detector, developed for ILDP, requires complete characterization of response and operating parameters. The performance of a prototype neutron albedo imager will need to be evaluated, when completed. Fundamental X-ray modelling studies are expected to lead to a breadboard instrument which must be characterized.
Where CCMAT/DRE Suffield, DRE Ottawa
Category Detection Sensors, Vehicle Mounted
Detection Sensors, Handheld
Other
When TNA testing; Fall 2001 and continuing, neutron albedo imager; Spring 2002, X-ray imager; Late 2002
Comments Lab test facility for X-Ray Backscatter nearing completion.
